HOME SERVICES USER GUIDES FAQ's NEWS About Us Memory Deposit News - 18th July 2006Network congestion is again a feature following Mumbai bombings just as in July 2005 London bombings. - Just days after the London Assembly released its report on the July 2005 London bombings which highlighted the problems with mobile networks in the aftermath of any major incident. The bombings in Mumbai again left people with the same communication difficulties of network congestion when trying to contact loved ones to check their well being. It is apparent that communication difficulties in the wake of almost any major incident are inevitable, indeed Dr. William Web, OFCOM is quoted in the London Assembly report on the July 2005 London bombings stating “There comes a point where there are too many people trying to access a network, it just grinds to a halt”. Within the same report the point is made that it is not likely to be commercially viable to provide sufficient capacity on networks to cope with such peaks in demand. Fortunately there was also advice for the network users contained in the report given by network operators which suggested that the public be encouraged to use the SMS (text message) facility rather than voice calls as this takes up less bandwidth and thereby reduces the demands upon the network, I personally struggled with the network congestion that followed the 7th July 2005 London bombings as I attempted to contact my daughter. I became convinced that we should all have some kind of communication plan (the experience had a significant influence in how we developed The Memory Deposit). It really does make sense to set up some kind of communication plan for yourself and your family. Regardless of how you do it, creating some form of communication plan will be invaluable to you and yours if you are ever caught up in a major incident. Just as importantly, you could help others in the same situation by playing your part in reducing the congestion on the networks and so let more people get the news they need.
